PANGKOR ISLAND (NO 4)







Pangkor is an island off the coast of Perak in north-west peninsular Malaysia, reached by ferry either from the old jetty or from Marina Island jetty both located in Lumut (a small coastal town that links to Ipoh through Sitiawan). It has a land area of only 8 square kilometers, and a population of approximately 25,000 islanders.



Pangkor has for centuries enthralled visitors with its charming beauty. In days of old, it was the refuge of seamen who sailed through the Straits of Malacca. Pangkor's many idyllic bays made it the perfect stopover. Pirates, adventurers, merchants and soldiers of fortune sought the peace and tranquility it had to offer.In stark contrast to malaysia's fast-paced progress, Pangkor remains a haven for those seeking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. THE MAIN ATTRACTIONS IN PANGKOR ISLANDS ARE :

BEACHES
The various beaches that one can enjoy are Pasir Bogak Beach, Teluk Nipah, Coral Beach and Teluk Belanga..

PANGKOR TOWN
is a nice place to visit as there are many great local restaurants where you can enjoy typical dishes originating from the island itself.

FU LIN KUNG TEMPLE
Is a Taoist temple that has been build at the foot of Pangkor Hill nearby the town of Sungai Pinang Besar. Another Chinese temple that you can visit is the Lin Ye Kong Temple; nearby Teluk Nipah (at the end of Coral Bay).

FISHING VILLAGE
The villages offers a closer look at life of the average Chinese fisherman and his family. The fishermen's houses are next to the docks.

KALI AMMAN TEMPLE
Is the only Indian temple on the island; especially interesting to visit during the two big festivals of Deepavali and Thaipusam.

DUTCH FORT (KOTA BELANDA)
Situated at Southwest of the island, nearby the small town of Teluk Gedung. The Dutch built this small fortress to get more grip on the tin mining industry in the 17th century. The fortress was used to keep foreign ships at bay, in order to control and monopolize the worldwide tin trade. The Dutch Fort currently is an historical monument.

BATU BERSURAT (TIGER ROCK)
Is a huge boulder with historical inscriptions on it. The inscriptions refer to a child and a tiger and is dated '1743 I.F.CRALO' together with the initials of the 'VOC' which refers to the Dutch East India Company.

CRAB ISLAND {PULAU KETAM} (NO 5)







Pulau Ketam, literally translated, means "crab island". It is a small island located off the coast of Klang. The island is easily accessible from the Port Klang jetty by ferry. The "floating houses" that come to view as visitors approach the island is a sight to awe any city slickers. Perching casually on long wooden stilts, these dwellings are suspended about one to ten (1-10) metre above sea level.
Pulau Ketam is the best opportunity for visitors to witness the natural beauty of fishing village. Visitors are able to enjoy the sightof mangrove swamps and species of birds around the island. And Pulau Ketam is also free from air polutions, traffic jams, finding car parking problem etc. 

ATTRACTIVE PLACES IN PULAU KETAM


FISH FARM



Fish farm is floating on the sea. It takes about 10 minutes journey to reach by boat. Fishes are reared in these fishing farms. Most of the living fish are exported to Hong Kong. Some of them will be transported to restaurants. These Fish Farm are seafood producer and the Farm are interesting site for tourists.


PULAU KETAM JETTY

Your first step on Pulau Ketam is the pulau Ketam Jetty. Villager like to loiter around enjoying sea breezes after dinner. It is really relaxing and enjoying. At night times, teenagers assemble here for their leisures and social activities.


COUPLE BRIDGE




In Pulau Ketam have a special bride called "Couple Bridge" in Mandarin. If you go to Koperasi Herr Ming Pulau Ketam will via from this bridge.

Here you can see the boast used for tranporting fish to the mainland. It is a nice place to take photos.


NANG THIAM KENG TEMPLE




The Nang Thiam Keng Hall is a common place for holding wedding dinners. In 6th of 6th Month of Chinese Calendar is the God's birthday. This is a big event here. A celebration of at least 14 days of Chinese Opera and Mini Concert make the nights more lively and energetic. Every 3 years, the committee board of the temple will organize the ritual of "Gods Patrol and blessing the island". The event will be attended by many temple's "God" together and "They" walk around the town, patrolling the sea, and guarding the island.


HOCK LENG KENG TEMPLE


One of the biggest temple in Pulau Ketam. The temple is beautiful with intricate sculptures and colorful painting. It celebrates its big events at 28th of 4th Month of Chinese Calender, with chinese opera and mini concert.


FIRST BRIDGE




There are 11 bridge in Pulau Ketam. (Sungai Lima has another 3). The first bridge is near main street. Here you can see a lot of boats parking at the small private jetties.

SELINGAN TURTLE ISLAND (NO 6)




At a 40km distance from Sandakan you can visit the Turtle Island. The Turtle Islands National Park comprises of 3 islands, Selingan, Gulisan and Bakungan Kechil (actually 10 in total, where 3 belong to Malaysia and the other 7 to the Philippines). The island got this name because of the many turtles that swim in the waters around the island. It is also the place where female Green turtles and Hawksbill turtles lay their eggs on the island beach. Throughout the year, they come ashore at night to lay their eggs; usually in batches of 50 to 80.

During the day, unwind on the white sandy beach of Pulau Selingan or snorkel on its immaculate reef to watch the serene turtles as they forage for food and rest amongst the corals before coming up for their next breath of air.



Only on the island of Selingan is it possible to stay overnight; a must for those who wish to see the Green and Hawksbill turtles laying their eggs. Turtles come ashore nightly to the Turtle Islands, and during the peak season of October up to 50 turtles can be seen visiting the shores to demonstrate their egg laying ritual.

Park regulations of the Turtle Islands Marine Park are strictly adhered to and visitors are not allowed on the beach from sunset to sunrise. A warden will call visitors to watch only one turtle laying eggs per night, the eggs are then collected and transplanted to a chamber in the hatchery, (not all nests are emptied by the park rangers, but some remain undisturbed and develop naturally).  The guests will then be given baby turtles from the rangers of Selingan to release into the sea; this is also done in the cover of night to ensure their chance of survival

HATCHING RELEASE PROGRAMME


The main attraction of the Turtle Islands Park is the turtle, watching turtle egg laying and hatchling release programme is the highlight of the visit; this, however, only occurs during the night. Thus, only overnight visitors to the islands have opportunity to experience the occasion. At the same time, visitors could learn and understood how the conservation process executed by parks employees.

SCUBA DIVING AND SNORKELING

Among the main recreation activities in Turtle Islands Park is scuba diving and snorkeling. Areas which this activities were allowed were divided into zones. 

MUD VOLCANO

Other touristic attraction is the bubbling mud volcanoes, which is only found in Pulau Bakkungan Kechil. The mud volcanoes found here is the only few found in Sabah (the other being on Pulau Tiga). A mud volcano is simply a mild surface bubbling of liquid mud and natural gas coming from underneath the surface of the earth.
